Massachusetts officials are ramping up efforts to boost compliance with the Real ID program, currently at only 57%, as the May deadline approaches. During a recent Joint Committee on Ways and Means meeting, concerns were raised about the significant number of residents still lacking the federally mandated identification, which is necessary for air travel and access to federal buildings.

Registrar Ogilvy highlighted the challenges faced in achieving compliance, noting that the program has experienced multiple delays since its inception following the 9/11 Commission recommendations. The state has been actively working to raise awareness through community outreach and media campaigns since late 2024, but many residents remain unaware of the requirements or face difficulties in obtaining the necessary documents.

The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) is responding by increasing appointment availability and accepting walk-ins for Real ID applications. They have also added weekend hours to accommodate demand, with 500 new Saturday appointments recently made available. Despite these efforts, the RMV acknowledges that some residents, particularly older individuals, may struggle with the documentation process, which requires proof of lawful presence, such as a birth certificate or marriage certificate for those who have changed their names.

While there is no indication that the compliance deadline will be extended, officials from the Transportation Security Administration have stated that there will not be a hard stop for travelers without a Real ID after May 7. Instead, travelers may be asked for additional identification and provided with information on obtaining a Real ID.

As the deadline looms, state officials are urging residents to take action and secure their Real IDs to avoid potential travel disruptions. The RMV's proactive measures aim to ensure that more residents are prepared and compliant in time for the upcoming deadline.
