During the Cape Cod Metropolitan Planning Organization meeting on December 16, 2024, public comments highlighted ongoing concerns regarding the Cape Cod Canal Bridges project and the need for improved communication from federal agencies involved in the environmental review process.
Steve Buckley, a local resident, expressed frustration over the lack of transparency and responsiveness from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration. He noted that many of his inquiries about the traffic capacity of the proposed bridges have gone unanswered for years. Buckley emphasized that the upcoming draft environmental impact statement, expected in the spring, would be the last opportunity for public input, making it crucial for residents to have their questions addressed beforehand.
To facilitate this, Buckley suggested that MassDOT project manager Brian Cordero and a representative from the Federal Highway Administration attend a future meeting to provide a formal question-and-answer session. He argued that having these officials present would ensure that residents receive direct answers and that there is a recorded account of the discussions.
John York, another attendee, echoed Buckley’s sentiments, praising the open house format for fostering direct interaction but lamenting the absence of Federal Highway representatives at such events. He pointed out that their lack of participation hinders effective communication and public engagement in the project.
The discussions underscored a pressing need for better public participation and transparency in the planning process, particularly as the community prepares for significant infrastructure changes. The MPO's next steps will be crucial in addressing these concerns and ensuring that residents have a voice in the future of the Cape Cod Canal Bridges project.
