The Comal Independent School District (CISD) Board of Trustees meeting on March 27, 2025, celebrated the achievements of local students in athletics and academics, highlighting the district's commitment to fostering excellence in various fields.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to recognizing the accomplishments of student-athletes from Smithson Valley High School, who competed in the UIL 5A swim meet. Notable swimmers included Cameron Kavalsas, Elise Hornberg, Ansley Reschick, and Eva Schneider, all coached by Heidi Duckworth and Brooke Wojcigamba. Their participation underscores the district's dedication to promoting physical fitness and competitive spirit among students.
The meeting also honored state qualifiers and champions in wrestling, with students from Canyon High School set to be recognized in April due to scheduling conflicts. Smithson Valley's Bryce Palmer was celebrated for winning the state title in the 150-pound weight class, alongside his teammates. The wrestling teams, coached by David Thomas, showcased the district's strength in athletics, with both boys and girls teams making impressive strides.
In addition to sports, the meeting highlighted achievements in technical education through DECA and HOSA programs. DECA, which prepares students for careers in marketing and management, saw participation from students at Canyon and Davenport High Schools. Notable qualifiers included Raghavendra Deborah Koranda and Pierce Honesay from Canyon High. Davenport High's Alexa Gleavis and Raquel Rendon also earned recognition for their marketing management skills.
HOSA students, who focus on health science education, were acknowledged as well, with Piper High School's Lehi Nazarov and Smithson Valley's Holly Bullard and Leah Romero qualifying for state-level competitions. These programs not only enhance students' career readiness but also contribute to the community's health and wellness initiatives.
Lastly, the meeting recognized students for their academic achievements with the Texas Theater Scholar Award. Students from Canyon and Smithson Valley High Schools were honored for their academic success, while Davenport High students will be recognized in April due to their participation in the UIL One Act Play.
