Teen smoking and vaping rates have hit historic lows, according to a recent report from the CDC. During the Northampton Board of Health meeting on November 21, 2024, officials highlighted that teen smoking is at its lowest on record, with teen vaping also dropping to a ten-year low. The use of nicotine pouches among teens remains below 2 percent, a figure the FDA deems very low.
The FDA's director of the tobacco division praised this trend, stating, "The continued decline in e-cigarette use among youth is a monumental public health win." This significant decrease in tobacco and nicotine product use among young people underscores the effectiveness of ongoing public health efforts.
Additionally, the meeting addressed regulations already in place that prohibit store owners from selling tobacco products to individuals under 21, with penalties for non-compliance. This enforcement aims to further protect youth from the risks associated with tobacco and nicotine use. The Board of Health's discussions reflect a commitment to maintaining and building on these positive trends in public health.
