A new initiative aimed at enhancing public safety in Bandera County took center stage at the Bandera City Council meeting on December 10, 2024. The proposal for a license plate reader program was presented by Sergeant Eric Morgan of the Texas Department of Public Safety, who highlighted its potential to act as a constant, vigilant presence on the roads.
Sergeant Morgan emphasized that the program could serve as an "extra deputy" available 24/7, providing crucial support in identifying stolen vehicles and locating missing persons. He shared two compelling cases from the past year where the absence of such technology hindered investigations.
In one instance, a hit-and-run incident resulted in a fatality, and the lack of license plate readers made it difficult to track down the suspect. In another case, a pursuit involving smugglers led to a tragic accident, underscoring the need for enhanced surveillance to deter criminal activity in the area.
Morgan's presentation was supported by a slideshow from Kristen McLeod, who joined the meeting online. The council members expressed interest in the program, with discussions anticipated to continue as they weigh the benefits of implementing this technology.
The proposed license plate reader program could significantly bolster law enforcement capabilities in Bandera, providing tools that could prevent crime and enhance community safety. As the council deliberates, residents are hopeful for a decision that prioritizes public security.
