Mayor Sherra announces First Night Northampton's 40th anniversary celebration plans

Northampton City Council is gearing up for a busy start to the new year with two significant events on the horizon. First, the council announced that applications for a vacant school committee position will be accepted until 5:30 PM on Monday, January 13. This vacancy, typically filled through elections, will be filled by a joint appointment from the city council and remaining school committee members. A joint meeting is scheduled for January 13 at 6:00 PM in the JFK Community Room, where candidates will present and be questioned before a vote is held to determine the appointment.

In addition to the school committee vacancy, Mayor Sherra highlighted the upcoming First Night celebration on December 31, marking its 40th anniversary. This annual event, organized by the Northampton Arts Council, promises a vibrant 24-hour celebration downtown, featuring over 20 venues and hundreds of performers, including family-friendly acts. The festivities will culminate in a fireworks display at 6:15 PM and a traditional ball raising from the Hotel Northampton.
