Lavaca County officials are set to enhance jail safety and efficiency with the approval of a video magistrate services agreement during the December 23, 2024, Commissioners Court meeting. This innovative system will allow magistrates to conduct hearings remotely, significantly reducing the risks associated with in-person interactions between judges and inmates, particularly those with violent or unpredictable behaviors.

The initiative, supported by a grant of nearly $9,000 from the Dixon Allen Fan Foundation, aims to improve security for both judicial staff and inmates. By utilizing video technology, magistrates can perform their duties from their offices or homes, minimizing the need for physical presence in the jail, which has been a concern given the nature of some detainees.

Fire chiefs unanimously recommended maintaining the ban due to lingering dry conditions despite recent rains. The court agreed, emphasizing the need for caution during the holiday season when fire risks can increase.
