Bell County is set to enhance broadband access for its rural communities following the approval of a $3.5 million subaward to AMG Technology during the Bell County Commissioner's Court meeting on October 28, 2024. This funding, part of the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) dollars, aims to improve internet affordability and accessibility across several underserved areas in the county.
AMG Technology, operating under the name NextLink, was selected as the sole recipient after a competitive bid process that attracted five applicants. The company plans to expand its existing network by adding 16 new fixed wireless towers and upgrading current infrastructure to provide high-speed internet service, with speeds reaching up to 1 gigabit in some locations. This initiative is expected to significantly enhance service quality, particularly in areas previously lacking adequate coverage.
Bill Baker, CEO of AMG, emphasized the project's commitment to rural Texas, noting that the new service will utilize licensed spectrum technology to minimize interference and improve connectivity through challenging terrains. The project is designed to serve over 3,000 locations, ensuring that residents in these areas will have access to reliable internet.
The timeline for the project is ambitious, with improvements expected to begin rolling out by the end of the first quarter of 2025. The majority of the work is projected to be completed within a year, with final touches extending into 2026. Baker assured the court that the company is prepared to start immediately, having already completed some preliminary engineering work.
In addition to expanding infrastructure, AMG Technology has committed to offering affordable pricing options, including low-income plans starting around $35 to $40, ensuring that all residents can benefit from the enhanced service.
This significant investment in broadband infrastructure is poised to transform connectivity in Bell County, addressing long-standing gaps in service and supporting the community's growth and development.
