Bell County officials are poised to close county offices on January 9 in observance of the National Day of Mourning for former President Jimmy Carter, pending a state proclamation. During the Bell County Commissioner's Court meeting on January 6, Judge Burrows emphasized the importance of aligning with the state’s decision, stating, “I will not go adverse to the will of the majority of the commissioner’s court.”
The motion to close the offices was amended to ensure that it would only take effect if the state also decided to shut down its offices. The court voted in favor of the motion with a 4 to 1 majority, reflecting a consensus to follow the state’s lead on this matter.
In addition to the closure discussion, the court also authorized outside counsel to execute legal proceedings related to a lawsuit involving WBW Single Development Group LLC. This decision was made to address ongoing legal matters concerning the county, with Commissioner Schneider moving for approval and Commissioner Mason seconding the motion.
As the county awaits confirmation from the governor's office regarding the state’s proclamation, officials are preparing for the potential closure, which underscores the community's respect for the late president's legacy.
