Sandoval County honors junior treasurers Jia Almanzad and Mario Templeton at completion ceremony

During the recent Sandoval County Commission meeting, a significant highlight was the recognition of two high school students who completed the second year of the Junior County Treasurer's Program. This initiative, designed to engage youth in local government, aims to foster understanding of the county treasurer's role and encourage civic involvement.

Treasurer Jennifer Taylor presented awards to Jia Almanzad, a junior at Ask Academy, and Mario Templeton, a senior at Rio Rancho High School. Over the past six months, these students participated in various educational activities, including attending county commission meetings and investment committee sessions, as well as receiving personalized instruction from Treasurer Taylor. Their final task involved conducting a mock board of finance meeting, which they executed successfully.

The Junior County Treasurer's Program, initiated in 2023, serves as a platform for students to gain firsthand experience in government operations. Treasurer Taylor expressed her hope that the program would leave a lasting impact on the participants as they prepare for their futures. Both students received plaques and medallions in recognition of their achievements, marking a milestone in their educational journey.

Looking ahead, Treasurer Taylor mentioned plans for further improvements to the program, indicating a commitment to enhancing the educational experience for future participants.
