The Tyler City Council meeting on March 26, 2025, highlighted several community initiatives and updates, including an upcoming cleanup event and developments at the local airport.
One of the key announcements was the Great Tyler Cleanup scheduled for April 12. This year’s event celebrates significant milestones, including the 40th anniversary of TxDOT's Adopt a Highway program, which originated in Tyler, and the 30th anniversary of Keep Tyler Beautiful. Community members are encouraged to participate in litter cleanup efforts, with additional information available through the Roses and Weeds podcast featuring local coordinators.
In addition to environmental efforts, the meeting discussed ongoing improvements at W.E. Winters Park, where a new mural themed around pollinators has been completed. The mural, created by artist Hilly Sherton, adds a vibrant touch to the park, which is currently undergoing revitalization.
The council also addressed developments at Tyler's airport, where a site study is underway for a new air traffic control tower. Local controllers have utilized virtual reality technology to evaluate three potential sites, focusing on safety, efficiency, and future expansion. The selected site will advance to the design phase, with hopes of securing construction funding soon.
Lastly, the meeting acknowledged the Tyler Fire Department's involvement in combating wildfires across Texas. Senior Captain Daniel Bailey has been deployed to assist with one of the largest wildfires in state history, reflecting the department's commitment to community safety.
The meeting concluded with a reminder of the Battle of the Badges softball game, a friendly competition between the fire and police departments, scheduled to take place shortly after the cleanup event.
