Sunnyvale officials outline plans to streamline special events permit process

Sunnyvale City Council has taken significant steps to enhance the special events permit process, aiming to make it more accessible and efficient for community organizers. Currently set at $48,000, the council is considering raising this amount by $100,000 to $200,000 to better support local events and organizations. This increase would allow for larger individual grants and potentially fund more community events, addressing the growing demand for such activities in Sunnyvale.

The council also explored the possibility of offering fee waivers for certain events, particularly for first-time organizers. However, there was a consensus that a structured approach to fee waivers would be necessary to avoid administrative complications. Instead, the focus may shift towards enhancing the grants program as a more effective means of supporting community events.

In response to the rising number of special event applications—32 already submitted in the first quarter of 2025—the council is considering additional staffing to manage the increased workload. A proposal for a full-time Recreation Manager position was discussed, aimed at overseeing the special events process and ensuring timely support for applicants.
