Subscribe for Free During the fiscal year 2023-2024, Denton residents contributed to the collection of over 35,000 tons of waste curbside, alongside nearly 5,200 tons of recyclable materials. This achievement translates to a significant reduction in waste generation per person, dropping from 6 pounds to 4.4 pounds daily, which is below the national average of 4.9 pounds. Bernersall attributed this success to increased recycling efforts and community participation, stating, "Without the citizens of Denton, we wouldn't be able to achieve these results."
The department's diversion rate has reached 26%, with a goal of 30% by 2030. Bernersall emphasized the importance of ongoing education and outreach to further improve these numbers, particularly in the area of organic waste management. The council discussed the potential for expanding commercial diversion programs and enhancing residential recycling practices.
In addition to the impressive statistics, Bernersall outlined future initiatives, including a pilot program for organics diversion in local schools and a proposed contract to capture renewable natural gas from the landfill. This initiative aims to convert landfill gas into a usable energy source, further promoting sustainability.
The meeting concluded with council members expressing their appreciation for the solid waste team's efforts and the positive impact on the community. As Denton continues to grow, the Solid Waste and Recycling Department is poised to implement innovative strategies to enhance waste management and environmental stewardship in the years to come.
