The Hawai‘i Board of Agriculture made significant strides in supporting local farmers during its March 25, 2025, meeting, approving two key subleases that will enhance agricultural production in the Hamakua Agricultural Park.
The board unanimously approved a request from Marites Libed to sublease Lot Number 1, a 10-acre parcel currently overgrown and vacant. Libed, who has been successfully farming on another lot in the area, aims to expand her operations to meet the growing demand for her diverse range of crops, including lettuce, eggplant, and various herbs. Her application was backed by her status as a bona fide farmer with over two years of full-time experience, ensuring compliance with agricultural regulations. The sublease is set to last until June 29, 2033.

Wang, who currently farms on multiple lots, is recognized as a bona fide farmer and meets all eligibility requirements. This sublease will also extend until June 29, 2033.
Additionally, the board discussed the assignment of General Lease 5707 from Altria Services Inc. to Malkyrain Farm LLC. This transfer will allow the new company, which consists of experienced agricultural professionals, to utilize the property for growing landscaping and edible plants, as well as producing compost and biochar. The assignment includes provisions to clear outstanding debts through an escrow process, ensuring a smooth transition.
These decisions reflect the board's commitment to fostering agricultural growth and supporting local farmers in Hawai‘i, paving the way for increased food production and sustainability in the region. As these subleases take effect, the board anticipates positive impacts on the local agricultural landscape and community food supply.
