The Georgia House of Representatives recently convened to discuss a pilot program aimed at enhancing outdoor education in schools across the state. This initiative, championed by Senator Ramon and supported by various members, seeks to create outdoor learning spaces that engage students in hands-on educational experiences.

Senator Ramon shared his personal connection to outdoor education, recalling his own impactful experiences at North Habersham Middle School. He emphasized the importance of outdoor learning, stating that it not only enriches students' understanding of subjects like life science but also fosters a deeper connection with nature. The pilot program aims to implement these outdoor classrooms in a select number of schools, with hopes of expanding the initiative statewide.

In addition to the outdoor education program, the meeting addressed an amendment that would increase the number of personal days for teachers from three to five, a change recommended by school boards to support educators' well-being.

Another significant topic was the requirement for Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in public schools. The current legislation mandates that each school must have a physician associated with the AED's implementation. However, this requirement has posed challenges for schools, particularly elementary institutions, in securing a physician. The proposed change would eliminate this requirement, allowing schools to rely on the physicians provided by AED manufacturers, thereby facilitating quicker access to these life-saving devices.

The discussions highlighted a shared commitment among lawmakers to improve educational experiences and safety for students. The outdoor education pilot program, in particular, reflects a growing recognition of the need for students to engage with their environment, especially in an age where screen time often overshadows outdoor activities.
