Columbus partners with hospitals to implement Epic electronic medical record system

The Columbus City Council meeting on March 25, 2025, focused on the introduction of the Community Connect program, which aims to enhance access to electronic medical records for local health services. Chair Green opened the discussion, highlighting the partnership between the city and local health organizations.

A representative from the Community Connect program emphasized the importance of the Epic electronic medical record system, noting its complexity and cost. The program is designed to assist smaller healthcare organizations that may lack advanced IT capabilities, enabling them to utilize this leading medical record system effectively.

The initiative will allow patients to access their health information directly through devices like smartphones and tablets. With all major health systems in Columbus, including Mount Carmel, already using Epic, the program will facilitate better communication between healthcare providers. This integration means that records from Columbus Public Health appointments will be accessible to other providers and vice versa, improving continuity of care.

The representative also pointed out the system's case management features, which can support social workers and case managers in coordinating care across various settings. This capability is particularly beneficial for populations that may struggle with providing accurate medical histories.

Following the presentation, the council members expressed their support, and the motion to pass the initiative was unanimously approved. The Community Connect program is expected to significantly improve healthcare access and coordination for Columbus residents.
