A significant proposal for the rehabilitation of the Hopbrook Dam was unveiled during the recent Open Space Committee meeting in Northborough, MA. The plan aims to enhance the dam's functionality while addressing safety concerns related to a sewer main that currently runs through it.
The proposed project includes relocating the sewer main from its current position within the dam to a safer location on natural ground. This relocation is crucial, as having a pipe running through a dam poses risks for both the structure and the surrounding environment. To facilitate this move, an overland bypass pipe will be constructed, running from West Main Street to Southwest Cut Off.
During discussions, committee members highlighted the potential for this bypass to serve a dual purpose. The Conservation Commission suggested that the necessary clearing for the bypass could also pave the way for a new surface trail. This trail would connect Davis Street to Shrewsbury, creating a long-desired pathway for residents and enhancing access to the area.
The committee expressed optimism about the project, noting that the temporary nature of the bypass—expected to last around six months—could be an opportunity to establish this new trail. The discussions reflect a collaborative effort to improve both infrastructure and community access, with the potential for positive outcomes for Northborough residents.
