City approves $19K for automated license plate recognition cameras to enhance safety

The McMinnville Board of Mayor and Aldermen took a significant step towards enhancing public safety during their recent meeting by approving the purchase of automated license plate recognition cameras. These high-tech devices are set to bolster law enforcement's ability to protect citizens by monitoring vehicles entering the city, particularly those linked to criminal activities.

The cameras will play a crucial role in identifying stolen vehicles and assisting in the search for missing children and wanted persons. By integrating this technology, McMinnville aims to improve its response to crime and enhance community safety. The contract with Fox Safety will cover six strategic locations within the city, divided into two contracts: one for $9,000 for cameras on TDOT roadways and another for $10,930 for municipal locations. The total expenditure of $19,930 has already been accounted for in the city’s budget, ensuring no additional financial strain.

Privacy concerns regarding the use of these cameras will be managed through annual policy audits, addressing community apprehensions about surveillance.
