Retired Teacher Launches Trade Schools to Support Montana's Reservation Students

Montana's education landscape is set to transform as a retired Whitefish High School teacher advocates for the establishment of trade schools across the state. After 29 years of teaching math, the educator observed a troubling trend: an increasing number of students were dropping out of school. In response, he initiated a summer program aimed at equipping students with essential job skills and work ethics.

The program proved successful, demonstrating that students could develop a strong work ethic in just two to three weeks. Many students who struggled academically thrived in a hands-on work environment, leading to meaningful employment opportunities, particularly in construction. Over his last four years at Whitefish High School, the teacher successfully guided 40 students into jobs while balancing their education.

Now retired, he is focused on expanding these trade training programs throughout Montana, including on the state's seven reservations. There is a growing demand for skilled workers in construction, yet many local students are unprepared to fill these roles. The educator's initiative aims to bridge this gap, providing students with the skills needed to succeed in high-paying jobs.

The teacher emphasized the importance of recognizing that students who struggle in traditional academic settings are not failures. Instead, they often excel when engaged in practical, hands-on learning experiences. As Montana moves forward with these trade school initiatives, the hope is to empower students, boost local economies, and create a workforce ready to meet the demands of emerging job markets.
