Students shine as Overture Awards finalists and Parker Scholes launches Coffee and Cars event

The Sycamore Schools Board of Education meeting held on February 19, 2025, highlighted several notable achievements and upcoming events within the district.

During the meeting, Mr. Lewis announced that two students, Clarissa Ramirez Hernandez and Jaden Pritchett, have been named finalists for the prestigious Overture Awards, with additional recognition given to semifinalists May Bachman and Salem Arts. This annual event showcases the talents of students, and the board expressed pride in the district's continued success in this area.

In another highlight, Mr. Hayab, a new computer science teacher, reported that his students won a congressional app challenge, allowing them to meet Congressman Landman and participate in a significant competition at the University of Cincinnati. This achievement underscores the innovative spirit and capabilities of Sycamore students.

The meeting also featured announcements of upcoming events, including Abe's choir cabaret on Saturday and Fashion for the Cure on Friday, which benefits the Dragonfly Foundation. Additionally, a student-led initiative, "Coffee and Cars," organized by junior Parker Scholes, has gained momentum and will take place in the high school parking lot. The event, which showcases unique cars, aims to raise funds for the Dragonfly Foundation.

The board also discussed community engagement efforts, including an "Ask Us Anything" session focused on weather-related inquiries, which saw participation from around 40 community members. Another session, specifically for elementary education, is scheduled for the following Wednesday, allowing parents to engage directly with elementary administrators.

The meeting concluded with a motion to approve the personnel consent agenda, reflecting the board's ongoing commitment to supporting its staff and students. Overall, the meeting showcased the district's dedication to celebrating student achievements and fostering community involvement.
