Wheeler Township supports Lignette's fiber optic expansion with BEAD grant recommendation

Gratiot County residents are set to benefit from enhanced internet access as the Board of Commissioners has moved to support a local fiber optic initiative. During the recent meeting on March 18, 2025, a proposal was presented to provide a letter of support for Lignette, a Hemlock-based internet company seeking to expand its fiber optic services in the area.

The initiative is tied to the state's BEAD (Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment) grants, which aim to improve internet connectivity across Michigan. Eric Fredericks, representing Lignette, has already received permission to begin limited fiber optic installations in Wheeler Township. However, with the backing of the county, the company hopes to significantly increase its reach, particularly in the northeast section of Wheeler Township.

Commissioners recognized the importance of this project, emphasizing their ongoing commitment to enhancing broadband access for county residents. The proposed letter of support will accompany Lignette's grant application, potentially facilitating a broader rollout of fiber optic services in Gratiot County.
