Anthony Wayne High School athletics achieves historic success with eight league championships

The Anthony Wayne Board of Education meeting on March 24, 2025, highlighted the remarkable achievements of the district's athletic programs during the fall sports season. Athletic Director Mr. Herman presented an overview of the season, which he described as potentially the most successful in the school's history since its inception in 1950.

The Northern Lakes League (NLL) offered ten championships in the fall, and Anthony Wayne secured an impressive eight of them. This success is underscored by record participation, with 406 high school athletes and 298 junior high athletes involved in various sports. Mr. Herman noted that while the high participation numbers are a positive sign, they also present challenges in terms of space and resources.

Among the standout performances, the boys' soccer team finished with a 6-1-1 record, claiming the league championship. The girls' soccer team also excelled, achieving a 7-1 record and becoming district champions, while the girls' tennis team maintained a perfect 10-0 record and finished third in the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association state tournament.

The football team achieved a perfect 10-0 regular season, marking only the third time in school history they have accomplished this feat. The volleyball team made history by reaching the state championship game for the first time, finishing as state runners-up after an impressive season.

Mr. Herman also recognized the achievements of individual coaches, with several being named NLL Coach of the Year, and two coaches receiving state-level honors. The meeting concluded with a celebration of the athletic department's accomplishments, emphasizing the hard work and dedication of both athletes and coaches.

In addition to the athletic discussions, the meeting touched on logistical challenges, including staffing shortages affecting transportation for students attending programs.
