Little Miami High School reports success of Panther Success Academy program

In the heart of Little Miami High School, a transformative initiative is taking shape, aimed at reshaping the educational landscape for students in need of alternative pathways. During the recent Little Miami Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Dr. Kevin Harleman and Mrs. Adrienne Sanders presented an update on the Panther Success Academy, a program designed to support students who require a different approach to learning.

Launched just a year ago, the Panther Success Academy has already shown promising results. Currently, 28 students are enrolled, and the impact on their behavior has been significant. Last year, these students collectively faced 307 discipline referrals; this year, that number has plummeted to just 2. This dramatic reduction highlights the effectiveness of the academy's tailored environment, which operates under different rules than traditional classrooms, allowing students to focus on their education without the distractions of typical disciplinary issues.

Attendance, while still a challenge, has also improved. The students recorded 947 absences last year, but this year, that number has decreased to 374, with an attendance rate hovering around 77%. The academy is not just about reducing absences; it also emphasizes career and workforce development. Students have engaged in community service projects, visited Sinclair Community College, and participated in hands-on activities like welding demonstrations and equine presentations.

A key feature of the Panther Success Academy is its partnership with Graduation Alliance, which provides an online learning platform complemented by instructor support. This innovative approach includes the introduction of interactive workforce development courses, making Little Miami the first school in Ohio to pilot such a program. Students are already exploring fields like HVAC through virtual reality experiences, enhancing their learning with cutting-edge technology.

As the board members listened intently, it was clear that the Panther Success Academy is more than just an alternative education program; it is a beacon of hope for students seeking a second chance.
