During the Bay County Board of Commissioners meeting on March 18, 2025, airport director James Kanter presented a significant initiative regarding MBS International Airport's revenue bond. This proposal, which will not financially burden Bay County residents, aims to enhance the airport's sustainability through the installation of solar canopies and ground-based solar arrays.
Kanter emphasized that the revenue bond, fully backed by the airport and its bond agent D.A. Davidson, is designed to offset energy costs for the airport terminal by approximately 35%. This project is part of a broader effort to improve energy efficiency, as it complements an existing solar initiative at the airport's rental car lot. Together, these projects are expected to reduce the airport's overall energy consumption by about 52%.

The plan includes level 2 chargers in the short-term parking lot, which provide a 6 to 8-hour charge, and level 1 chargers in the long-term parking lot, which function like standard household outlets and take about a day to charge a vehicle. Notably, a level 3 fast charger will also be installed near the hangar line, accessible to the public without parking fees, and it may even support charging for electric aircraft, which are anticipated to arrive at MBS International Airport.
This initiative reflects a growing commitment to renewable energy and sustainability within the region, aligning with broader trends in environmental responsibility and innovation in transportation. As the airport moves forward with these projects, it positions itself as a leader in energy efficiency and electric vehicle support, potentially attracting more travelers and enhancing the overall airport experience.
