Portsmouth is set to benefit from a significant offshore wind project as South Coast Wind presented its plans during the Town Council meeting on December 9, 2024. Helen Terry, the external affairs manager for South Coast Wind, outlined the project's scope and its potential economic impact on the community.

The offshore wind project will be located approximately 30 miles south of Virginia and 60 miles south of Rhode Island. It involves the construction of an export cable that will run 95 miles through federal and state waters, ultimately reaching a repurposed energy hub in Somerset, Massachusetts. This hub, formerly a coal-fired power plant, is being transformed into a renewable energy center.

Terry highlighted that the project has been awarded contracts to supply over 1,200 megawatts of energy to Massachusetts, a move that aligns with the state's renewable energy goals. The town of Portsmouth has entered into a host community agreement with South Coast Wind, which will provide revenue to support local climate resiliency projects and other initiatives at the town's discretion.

The project is expected to foster workforce development and enhance the local supply chain, contributing to both economic growth and energy reliability in the region. As construction activities progress, further updates will be provided to ensure community awareness and engagement.
