A significant moment for East Greenwich was highlighted during the Town Council meeting on October 28, 2024, as members reflected on their recent participation in the 88th annual meeting of the Centennial Legion of Historic Military Commands. Council members Joanne Breslin and Lee shared their experience attending the event, hosted by the Varnum regiment and the Kentish Guard, which celebrated the latter's 250th anniversary. The gathering took place at the State House, where various East Coast regiments showcased their historical military uniforms, creating a vibrant atmosphere on a windy day.
In addition to this celebration, the council discussed an exciting initiative led by Al Rinaldi, the director of planning. Rinaldi and fellow council member Matt Cacheri met with representatives from the East Greenwich Historic Preservation Society to explore the creation of a life-sized bronze statue commemorating the first mass enlistment of enslaved men in the American military, which occurred in East Greenwich in 1778. This project, still in its early stages, is expected to take about four years to complete. The council plans to invite the Historic Preservation Society to present their proposal in early 2025, promising an impressive presentation that highlights this important piece of local history.
These discussions not only celebrate East Greenwich's rich military heritage but also emphasize the community's commitment to preserving and honoring its historical narratives.
