San Antonio updates affordable housing initiatives and support programs

During a recent meeting of the San Antonio Planning and Community Development Committee, significant updates were shared regarding the city's housing initiatives and strategies aimed at addressing affordable housing challenges. The discussions highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance housing accessibility and support for vulnerable populations.

Verónica García, a key speaker at the meeting, provided an overview of the strategic plan for the Housing and Neighborhood Services Department. She emphasized the collaborative approach taken with various partners, including Bexar County, Opportunity Home, and the Housing Trust, to define affordable housing and prioritize legislative efforts. Since the adoption of the strategic plan in 2022, the city has made notable progress, completing over 5,360 affordable housing units and achieving 34% of its overall goals.

The committee also discussed the importance of creating and preserving affordable housing as a means to combat homelessness. Currently, there are 477 Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) units under construction or nearing completion, with plans to provide 80 affordable housing units by December. Additionally, two new Public Housing Authority (PHA) programs are set to launch in Districts 2 and 3, aimed at further innovating housing solutions.

Another strategy presented involved increasing the number of accessory dwelling units (ADUs), which can provide additional income for homeowners and support elderly residents. The city has updated its website to include educational materials on the benefits of ADUs and resources for financing their construction. A new planning library was also launched to expedite the construction process for these units.

The committee underscored the importance of community engagement in fostering homeownership by reducing initial costs associated with purchasing a home. The council adopted a policy for designations last October and continues to accept applications for affordable housing subsidies. Recently, a proposal was accepted for over 400 affordable housing units, which includes funding for 22 projects focused on home rehabilitation.
