Maui County's Council meeting on March 21, 2025, celebrated the remarkable achievements of local high school wrestlers, highlighting their dedication and success at the Hawaii High School Athletic Association State Wrestling Championships.

The council unanimously adopted Resolution 25-81, honoring Mika Labuanan from Kamehameha Schools Maui and Jalia Miguel from HP Baldwin High School for their historic victories. Labuanan made history by becoming the first boy from the Maui Interscholastic League to win four state wrestling titles, while Miguel secured her third consecutive state title, marking her as one of only four girls from the league to achieve this feat. Both athletes plan to continue their wrestling careers at the collegiate level.

Council member Paulton, who introduced the resolution, expressed pride in the athletes' accomplishments, stating, "Their extraordinary performance has brought great pride and honor to their families, schools, and the people of Maui." The resolution also recognized the coaches who played pivotal roles in the athletes' journeys.

Following this, Resolution 25-82 was adopted, congratulating additional champions: Blake Abernathy, Te Ata Mata'afa Grove, Pita Takafua, and Bryson Adrick, all from HP Baldwin High School. Each athlete showcased exceptional skill, with Abernathy and Mata'afa Grove winning state titles in their respective weight classes.

The meeting concluded with heartfelt speeches from the athletes, who expressed gratitude for the support from their families, coaches, and the community. Labuanan and Miguel emphasized the importance of perseverance and teamwork, inspiring future generations of wrestlers in Maui.
