City proposes significant streetscape improvements for Meridian and Drexel Avenues

The City of Miami Beach is moving forward with significant improvements to Meridian Avenue and Drexel Avenue as part of the long-awaited Lincoln Road Master Plan. This initiative, which has been in development since its initial approval by the Historic Preservation Board in 2015, aims to enhance pedestrian experiences and connectivity in the area, particularly in light of recent investments in the nearby Convention Center and cultural institutions.

The proposed changes include widening sidewalks, adding new street trees, and creating designated areas for outdoor dining and bike lanes. Notably, the design will feature new pavement treatments that harmonize with existing Lincoln Road aesthetics, incorporating precast concrete pavers with exposed shell aggregate in various colors. This approach aims to maintain the historical character of the area while modernizing its infrastructure.

City officials emphasized the importance of minimizing disruption to local businesses during construction, which had previously been stalled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The project will be executed in phases, with the first phase focusing on lighting upgrades and the second phase addressing the streetscape improvements on Meridian and Drexel Avenues.

Drexel Avenue will see a shift towards pedestrianization, with plans to limit vehicular traffic and create a larger plaza space for cultural events. This area will include an amphitheater designed for community gatherings and performances, further enhancing the cultural vibrancy of the district.

During the meeting, board members raised concerns regarding traffic patterns, the maintenance of new infrastructure, and the potential impact on local businesses. Questions were also posed about the design of bollards intended to protect pedestrians, with a strong preference for solutions that do not obstruct views.
