Traffic congestion at a key Muskego intersection has prompted city officials to consider a comprehensive traffic study, as peak hour backups continue to frustrate local drivers. The intersection of Woods Road and Test Corners has become a bottleneck, particularly during morning and afternoon rush hours, as more residents use it as a shortcut to Franklin due to ongoing roadwork in the area.
City officials reported that the intersection lacks dedicated turn lanes, which exacerbates the traffic issues. A recent police report highlighted 12 property damage accidents and four injury-related incidents over the past five years, raising concerns about safety and traffic flow.
To address these challenges, the Public Works & Safety Committee discussed the possibility of commissioning a traffic study, estimated to cost between $5,000 and $7,000. This study would analyze peak hour traffic patterns, assess crash history, and provide recommendations for potential improvements, such as adding turn lanes or even constructing a roundabout.
However, committee members expressed concerns about funding, noting that the current budget does not allocate resources for such a study. With the city facing financial constraints, officials are exploring whether any surplus funds from the 2024 budget could be redirected for this purpose.
While the traffic study could offer valuable insights, it remains uncertain whether the city will proceed, as officials weigh the necessity of the study against budgetary limitations. The committee's discussions reflect a growing recognition of the need for improved traffic management in Muskego, but immediate action may be delayed until financial resources are identified.
