Cochise County secures grant for innovative mental health support team initiative

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to discussing the Cochise County Mental Health Support Team project, which is funded by a grant from the Legacy Foundation of Southeast Arizona. The project aims to address the mental health needs of community members who may not have committed crimes but are experiencing crises, such as suicidal thoughts or substance abuse issues. The team, which includes licensed behavioral health professionals, is designed to provide immediate support and connect individuals with necessary resources, thereby reducing the burden on law enforcement and emergency services.

Commander Hannah Watkins highlighted the importance of this initiative, noting that it has already made a substantial impact by proactively engaging with individuals in need. The program has successfully reduced the number of emergency calls from a local veteran suffering from PTSD and alcoholism by providing regular check-ins and support, demonstrating the effectiveness of community-based mental health interventions.

Additionally, the meeting addressed a proposed resolution to support legislation that would allow for the drop-off of mail-in ballots until 5 PM on election day. This proposal is currently in the process of being considered for the ballot, and the council plans to discuss it further in upcoming sessions.

The meeting concluded with discussions about the ongoing need for funding to sustain and expand the mental health support team, with efforts being made to seek additional resources without impacting the county's budget. The overall focus remains on enhancing community health services and ensuring that residents receive the support they need during crises.
