Osseo ESPs advocate for fair wages and recognition at school board meeting

During the Osseo Public Schools School Board Regular Meeting on March 18, 2025, a significant focus was placed on the concerns of Educational Support Professionals (ESPs) regarding their pay and job responsibilities. Several ESPs voiced their frustrations about being underpaid for the critical roles they play in supporting students and teachers.

Sonia Greenfield, an ESP, highlighted the disparity in pay for her clerical duties, which she argued do not reflect the actual work she performs. She noted that during her hour as a clerical ESP, she supervises students during lunch and recess, a role that involves much more than what is outlined in her job description. Greenfield emphasized that her responsibilities align more closely with those of an instructional ESP, which commands a higher pay scale. She called for respect and recognition of the work ESPs do, stating, “Dollars 25 an hour is not too much to ask because we are worth it.”

Michelle Dennard, another long-serving ESP, echoed these sentiments, questioning whether the district's core values of integrity and fairness are truly reflected in how ESPs are treated. She pointed out that many ESPs are forced to take on multiple jobs to make ends meet, raising concerns about the lack of support and prioritization in contract negotiations. “We deserve to be a priority,” Dennard asserted, urging the board to recognize the essential role ESPs play in the educational environment.

Other ESPs shared their experiences, including challenges related to inadequate training and the physical demands of their roles. They expressed a strong commitment to their work and the students they serve, but also a pressing need for fair compensation that reflects their contributions.

The meeting underscored the ongoing struggle for better wages and working conditions for ESPs, who are vital to the functioning of schools and the well-being of students. As the district moves forward, the voices of these dedicated professionals highlight the need for action that aligns with the values the district promotes.
