Orland Park police report 35% drop in index crimes since 2016

Orland Park continues to solidify its reputation as one of the safest communities in Illinois, with a significant reduction in crime rates over the past several years. During a recent government meeting, officials highlighted that index crimes have decreased by 35% since 2016, with the village recording fewer than 1,000 index crimes for the last six years. This includes notable declines in theft and violent crime, positioning Orland Park as a leader in safety among U.S. suburbs.

The police department reported that motor vehicle theft remains a challenge, primarily due to the prevalence of keyless ignition systems. Officials urged residents to adopt a "9 PM routine" to secure their vehicles and belongings, emphasizing that 90% of vehicle thefts occur when keys are left inside cars.

Despite a spike in violent crime in 2017, attributed to changes in prosecution policies, the village has since implemented strategic adjustments that have effectively reduced crime rates. Orland Park now boasts the lowest violent crime rate among communities with populations under 50,000 in Illinois, with only a small number of incidents reported.

The meeting also addressed the impact of rideshare services like Uber and Lyft on reducing DUI incidents, as more residents opt for these alternatives rather than driving after drinking. This trend has contributed to a safer environment on the roads.
