Cottage Grove Police Department welcomes six new officers and therapy dog Riggs

The Cottage Grove Public Services Meeting held on March 17, 2025, featured significant updates from the Cottage Grove Police Department, presented by Detective Sergeant Justin Henser. Henser, who has served in the department for over a decade, highlighted several key developments, including personnel changes, community initiatives, and equipment upgrades.

One of the most notable announcements was the hiring of six new officers this year. This includes three lateral hires from other agencies and three new recruits who will join the force after completing their post-licensing requirements. Among the new hires, two are active Community Service Officers (CSOs), and one is part of the CSO cadet program, which supports individuals in their journey to become police officers.

Henser also shared exciting news about the department's new therapy canine, Riggs, a golden retriever mix, who will be officially sworn in at a ceremony scheduled for the following night. The introduction of Riggs is part of the department's ongoing efforts to enhance community relations and support mental health initiatives.

Additionally, the police department has embedded a social worker within its team, funded in part by Washington County. This social worker will assist officers in responding to crisis situations and provide mental health services, further strengthening the department's commitment to community welfare.

On the equipment front, the department is set to receive new tasers, known as Taser Sevens, which will replace older models currently in use. This upgrade aims to enhance officer safety and effectiveness in the field.
