Tolleson Union High School District (TUHSD) officials are considering a request from students and parents to allow a competitive team to stay at a state hotel during an upcoming event, a move that could enhance their safety and overall experience. During the board meeting on January 14, 2025, representatives expressed concerns over logistical challenges and safety issues related to commuting from a distant hotel.
For the past three years, the team has sought permission to stay at the state hotel, which they believe would provide a safer and more conducive environment for their competition. Last year, they received verbal approval but faced complications with registration deadlines. This year, however, they encountered pushback despite their efforts to secure the necessary arrangements.
The team’s spokesperson highlighted the importance of staying at the hotel, emphasizing that the long hours of competition—from early morning until late at night—make it difficult for students to manage their time and rest adequately. They argued that commuting back and forth poses safety risks, particularly in the downtown area at night. The spokesperson noted that the district covers meals and transportation for 20 members, and they are not seeking additional funding, but rather permission to stay at the hotel.
Michelle Velasquez, a parent of one of the team members, echoed these sentiments, stressing that the students have worked hard and deserve a supportive environment during their first major competition. She pointed out that without proper accommodations, students are left to rest on the floor amidst the chaos of the event, which detracts from their experience.
Board members acknowledged the concerns raised and committed to following up with district officials to explore potential solutions. They recognized the urgency of the situation, as registration for the event closes on January 30. The board plans to address the logistics and provide a response in the coming days.
This decision could significantly impact the students' performance and well-being during the competition, highlighting the district's commitment to supporting its students in achieving success.
