Building safety director proposes new permitting exemptions for Florida residents

Building Safety Director Mike Savage emphasized that the proposed ordinance is the result of four years of collaborative work with citizens. The new approach replaces the previous system, which required residents to fill out exemption forms for specific projects. Instead, the ordinance now provides a clear bullet-point list of activities that do not require permits, such as simple roof repairs up to 100 square feet. This change aims to minimize government intrusion into residents' lives and make it easier for them to manage minor repairs and improvements.

However, the discussion also highlighted the absence of specific language regarding the waiver of building inspection fees. Savage pointed out that if the board wishes to consider waiving fees for certain projects, such as water heater installations, they would need to include explicit provisions in the ordinance.
