A powerful testimony on the importance of recovery programs for dental professionals took center stage during the North Dakota State Legislature's House Industry, Business and Labor meeting on March 18, 2025. Dr. May, a West Fargo dentist, shared his personal journey through addiction and recovery, emphasizing the critical need for accessible support systems for those in the healthcare field.
Dr. May recounted his struggles with oral opiate addiction and subsequent alcohol use after moving to North Dakota, where he found himself without a monitoring program. His turning point came about a year ago when he sought help through a recovery program in Fargo, aided by the support of loved ones. "Being in recovery is probably one of the hardest things that any individual can partake," he stated, highlighting the transformative impact of the program on his life and professional capabilities.
The dentist underscored the alarming statistics that suggest 10 to 15 percent of individuals in the U.S. grapple with addiction, which translates to approximately 40 to 50 dental health professionals in North Dakota alone. He argued that providing access to professional health programs would not only benefit those struggling with addiction but also enhance the overall quality of care for patients and the community.
Dr. May's heartfelt appeal resonated with lawmakers, as he called for legislation that would eliminate the fear of judgment and repercussions for dental professionals seeking help. "Allowing dental professionals access to a professional health program would benefit our patients, our staff, our community, and the dental professionals of the state," he asserted.
The discussion was met with empathy from representatives, including a poignant acknowledgment from Rep. Schauer, who shared a personal connection to addiction through his son-in-law's experience. The meeting concluded with a strong sense of support for the proposed legislation, which aims to create a safer and more supportive environment for healthcare providers facing addiction challenges.
