San Francisco creates Castro Upper Market Entertainment Zone to boost local businesses

A new entertainment zone is set to transform the Castro District in San Francisco, as the Board of Supervisors moves forward with an ordinance to establish the Castro Upper Market Entertainment Zone. This initiative, championed by Supervisor Rafael Mandelmann, aims to enhance outdoor activities and support local businesses in the area, which have struggled to recover from the pandemic.

The proposed entertainment zone will encompass several key streets, including Eighteenth Street between Diamond and Sanchez, and parts of Market and Church Streets. This marks the fourth entertainment zone in San Francisco, following similar initiatives in Front Street, Thrive City, and Coal Valley. Mandelmann emphasized the need for such zones, stating that they would allow local restaurants and bars to sell alcohol outdoors, thereby boosting their revenue and encouraging community engagement.

During the meeting, public comments reflected a mix of support and concern. Business owners like Chris Hastings, who runs The Lookout, voiced strong backing for the initiative, highlighting its potential to revitalize the neighborhood culturally and economically. Hastings noted that the Castro represents a significant cultural hub and that the entertainment zone could help restore its vibrancy.

Conversely, some community members expressed reservations, questioning the prioritization of business interests over pressing social issues, such as homelessness. One speaker urged the city to show equal urgency in addressing the needs of vulnerable populations.

Supporters of the entertainment zone, including representatives from the Castro Community Benefit District, argued that it would not only enhance local festivities but also ensure that profits from alcohol sales remain within the community, rather than going to outside vendors.
