Fayette County Public Schools enhances safety with new resource officers and mental health support

Fayette County Public Schools (FCPS) held a significant budget workshop on February 27, 2025, focusing on the ongoing enhancements to school safety and mental health services. This meeting highlighted the district's commitment to creating a secure learning environment for students, a priority that has evolved since the establishment of the District Safety Advisory Council in 2018.

The council, composed of school and community leaders, has been instrumental in assessing safety protocols and addressing emerging threats. Their efforts culminated in a comprehensive safety investment plan that has led to substantial improvements in facilities, mental health services, and the presence of school resource officers (SROs). The district has expanded its SRO program, now deploying teams of four officers at each high school, ensuring they are available to foster positive relationships with students both during school hours and at extracurricular activities.

Middle schools have also seen the addition of dedicated police officers, which is crucial given the unique challenges faced by students in this age group. The presence of SROs in elementary schools, which was previously questioned, has proven beneficial, with officers actively engaging in community-building activities and educational programs.

Mental health support has emerged as a critical focus area, with the district responding to community feedback by lowering the student-to-mental health professional ratio to 250:1. This initiative has led to the hiring of over 80 mental health professionals, enhancing the support available to students. The district has also implemented a detailed threat assessment protocol to ensure a proactive approach to safety.

In addition to physical security measures, such as alarm systems on exterior doors and secure vestibules in every school, the workshop underscored the importance of fostering a culture of safety and support within the schools.
