Becker County launches organic waste recycling initiative with MPCA grant

The City of Detroit Lakes held its Regular City Council Meeting on February 11, 2025, addressing several key topics, including community projects and environmental initiatives.

The meeting commenced with a significant announcement regarding a donation of $25,000 from the Berry Foundation, aimed at enhancing accessibility at the city’s dock area. The funds will contribute to the development of an ADA-compliant dock system, which will include a fishing pier designed to facilitate easier access for boaters and individuals with disabilities. The total funding for this project now stands at $96,000, with efforts ongoing to secure additional matching grants and donations.

Council members expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the importance of creating multiple accessible spaces for activities such as kayaking and fishing. The integration of these facilities is expected to improve the overall experience for residents and visitors alike.

Steve Skoog, the Environmental Services Director for Becker County, reported on a recent grant received from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) to initiate organic waste collection. This initiative aims to reduce the amount of food waste entering landfills by promoting composting efforts. Skoog shared that Becker County generates approximately 21,000 tons of garbage annually, with a significant portion currently being incinerated or sent to landfills. The new program is part of a broader strategy to enhance recycling efforts and minimize waste.
