Bayshore Design proposes shoreline protection and stabilization projects in Fleet's Bay

Lancaster County's Wetlands Board has taken significant steps to protect local shorelines from erosion during their recent meeting on March 13, 2025. The board approved two key projects aimed at stabilizing vulnerable areas along the waterways.

The first project involves the installation of a revetment along a vegetated shoreline to combat ongoing erosion. This small revetment will be strategically placed to minimize disturbance to existing wetland grasses, ensuring the preservation of local vegetation while enhancing shoreline protection. Board members expressed satisfaction with the design, which aims to mitigate erosion without harming the surrounding ecosystem.

In a second initiative, the board approved a proposal for a 70-foot armor stone spur and a corresponding armor stone sill along the shoreline of Little Bay. This project, designed to stabilize a migrating sandbar, includes beach nourishment and the planting of wetland vegetation. The design is tailored to withstand significant wave action, reflecting the area's unique environmental challenges. Board members noted the importance of this project in preserving the natural landscape and preventing further erosion.

Additionally, the board reviewed a request to replace four failing jetties on the Rappahannock River with new armor stone structures. This replacement aims to enhance the durability of the jetties while maintaining their original footprint, ensuring continued protection for the riverbank.
