Fond Du Lac declares May 3 World Migratory Bird Day with community events planned

Under the warm glow of the Fond du Lac City Hall, a passionate discussion unfolded, highlighting the importance of birds and their migration patterns. During the recent City Council meeting, a resolution was proposed to declare May 3 as World Migratory Bird Day in Fond du Lac, a move that aims to raise awareness about the critical role birds play in our ecosystem.

Council member Mr. Gallier took the floor, sharing his personal connection to birding. He described the joy of visiting Souples Marsh in spring, where the once barren landscape transforms into a vibrant habitat teeming with life. “You do not need to be a well-known writer or even well-versed in birds to love their chatter in the morning,” he emphasized, inviting everyone to appreciate the beauty of these creatures. He noted the alarming statistic that the world has lost three billion birds in the last 50 years, urging residents to create bird-friendly environments in their own yards.

The council meeting also announced upcoming events to celebrate this day, including guided bird walks led by local experts Carrie and Dave Saloff, and an educational evening with Amber Eschenbach, who will bring a rehabilitated kestrel to the library on April 24.
