Senate passes bill to overhaul Mississippi's 911 emergency communication services

Mississippi's Senate has taken a significant step towards modernizing emergency communication services with the introduction of a new bill aimed at overhauling the state's 9-1-1 system. The funds collected will be allocated to Emergency Communication Districts (ECDs) to support the transition to NG 9-1-1 systems.

A key feature of the bill is the establishment of an authority within MEMA, led by a director and supported by a 13-member advisory board composed of local officials. This authority will develop a statewide NG 9-1-1 plan, set standards for implementation, and ensure that funds are distributed equitably across the state.

Senators emphasized the importance of this bill in enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of emergency response times. The integration of advanced technologies will allow for better communication between 9-1-1 callers and first responders, ultimately improving public safety.
