A new affordable housing project, Kalei Maua Village, is set to transform a vacant lot in Honolulu into a vibrant community, featuring 27 rental units designed for low-income residents. The City Council meeting on March 8 highlighted the project's key details, including its expected completion by the end of next year.
Kalei Maua Village will consist of seven three-story residential buildings and a centrally located community center. The community center will include amenities such as a children's playlot and a community garden, fostering a sense of neighborhood among future residents. The project aims to provide a mix of unit types, including 28 one-bedroom, 87 two-bedroom, and 12 three-bedroom apartments.
Affordability is a cornerstone of the project, with 19 units designated for residents earning 60% of the area median income (AMI) and seven units for those at 30% AMI. Monthly rents will start at $783 for a one-bedroom unit and go up to $2,172 for a three-bedroom unit, making it accessible for families and individuals in need.
The development will also feature sustainable elements, such as solar water heating and fiber cement siding for the building exteriors. Additional amenities will include bicycle storage, a picnic area, and a playground, enhancing the quality of life for residents.
With building permits recently approved, construction is poised to begin soon, marking a significant step towards addressing the affordable housing crisis in Honolulu. The project not only promises to provide much-needed housing but also aims to create a welcoming community atmosphere for its residents.
