Portland unveils plans for new Crisis Stabilization Center and community engagement meeting

Multnomah County officials provided an update on the development of a new crisis stabilization center during the regular meeting on March 13, 2025. This facility aims to enhance community support for individuals in crisis, particularly those struggling with substance use and mental health issues.

The meeting highlighted the progress made in securing a permanent location for the center, which is part of a broader initiative to improve behavioral health services in the region. Assistant Director Greg Hawker reported that the county is moving forward with the property purchase after completing a thorough environmental assessment, confirming that the site is suitable for development. Mark Harris, the strategic initiatives manager, announced an upcoming public meeting scheduled for March 20, where residents can learn more about the facility and provide feedback. The meeting also addressed the importance of establishing a "Good Neighbor Agreement" to foster positive relationships with local residents and businesses. This agreement will outline how the center will operate in a way that prioritizes community safety and addresses potential concerns related to public health and safety.

Commissioner Brown Edwards expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming opening of temporary sobering beds, which will provide first responders with a safe place to take individuals who are intoxicated, rather than relying on emergency rooms or jails. This service is seen as a critical step in addressing the needs of the community and improving overall public safety.
