Saint Helens School District to form district equity committees by June

During the St. Helens School Board meeting on March 12, 2025, Superintendent Dr. Gray outlined significant developments regarding the establishment of district equity committees, a requirement stemming from Senate Bill 732 passed by the Oregon legislature in 2021. This legislation mandates that each school district form an educational equity advisory committee, which will be referred to as district equity committees in St. Helens.

Dr. Gray announced that applications for community members, staff, and students to join these committees will be distributed on March 17. The goal is to review applications and form the committee by June, with a requirement that one member from this committee will also serve on the budget committee, should there be an opening. The first meetings for the district equity committee are scheduled to begin on September 15, with monthly sessions thereafter.

In addition to the equity committees, Dr. Gray mentioned the creation of a Superintendent's Advisory Council, which will also have its applications released on the same day. This council is part of a corrective action plan that the board will vote on later in the meeting. Dr. Gray emphasized the importance of these initiatives, stating that they are crucial for the district's commitment to equity and community involvement.

The meeting also highlighted the dedication of the school principals and staff, with Chair Douglas expressing gratitude for their hard work and suggesting they take a well-deserved rest after their long hours.
