Clackamas County officials have taken a significant step towards addressing the region's housing crisis by approving a draft comment letter on the Oregon Housing Needs Analysis. During a recent policy session, the Board of County Commissioners reviewed and enhanced the letter, which emphasizes the complexities of infrastructure and financing in relation to housing availability. Commissioner Savas highlighted the need for clearer language regarding these issues, leading to a strengthened paragraph that outlines the unique challenges faced by different communities in the county.
The letter received unanimous approval from the commissioners, signaling a commitment to advocate for better housing solutions in the region. "These issues complicate balancing peer-based comparisons between these communities," noted Dan Johnson, Director of Transportation and Development, as he presented the revisions.
Following the approval of the letter, the meeting transitioned to discussions on two major redevelopment projects: Clackamas Heights and Hillside Park. Adam Brown, Deputy Director of Health Housing and Human Services, and Devon Ellen, Housing Development Director, sought concept endorsements for these projects, which aim to utilize regional affordable housing bond funds.
The Clackamas Heights redevelopment is particularly ambitious, transforming a 16-acre site into a vibrant community with up to 225 affordable homes, complete with new infrastructure and amenities. This project is part of a broader strategy to leverage existing public housing resources to increase affordable housing opportunities in Clackamas County.
The commissioners expressed their support for the projects, with one remarking on the long journey to this point, reflecting on past controversies surrounding low-income housing. The approval of these initiatives marks a crucial advancement in Clackamas County's efforts to meet its housing production goals, exceeding expectations by 150%.
As the county moves forward with these plans, the focus remains on innovative solutions to combat rising housing costs and ensure that all residents have access to affordable living options.
