During the recent East Tennessee State University (ETSU) Board of Trustees meeting, significant progress was reported on the university's Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), titled "Go Beyond the Classroom." This initiative, which focuses on community engaged learning, aims to enhance student success by providing experiential learning opportunities outside traditional classroom settings.
Susan McCracken, who leads the QEP, highlighted that the plan was officially approved in December 2023, marking the completion of its first year. The initiative is designed to ensure that every undergraduate student at ETSU has the chance to engage in community-based learning experiences during their studies. McCracken emphasized the importance of creating a reciprocal relationship between the university and community agencies, where both parties benefit from student involvement.
In the past year, 43 courses received the community engaged learning designation, with nearly 1,000 students participating. Feedback from students and faculty has been overwhelmingly positive, with many noting the practical benefits of hands-on learning. For instance, one student reflected on how her course experience reshaped her understanding of her future role in healthcare, emphasizing the importance of serving others.
The meeting also showcased various initiatives under the QEP, including professional development opportunities for faculty, community engagement grants, and events designed to connect students with local organizations. Notably, the "ETSU Elevate" program was mentioned as a platform for students to develop leadership skills while working on community projects.
Looking ahead, ETSU aims to achieve recognition as a community engaged designated university by the Carnegie Foundation. Plans are in place to establish a campus-wide community engagement committee and to enhance support for faculty conducting community-based research.
Overall, the discussions at the meeting underscored ETSU's commitment to integrating community engagement into its educational framework, with the goal of enriching student experiences and fostering a culture of service within the region. The board expressed support for these initiatives, recognizing their potential to significantly impact student success and community relations.
