A new congregate care facility for senior citizens is set to transform a former hotel site in San Bernardino, following a recent Planning Commission meeting. The proposed facility, located at 2000 Ostroms Way, will repurpose an existing 66,373-square-foot building on a 3.96-acre parcel, aiming to provide essential services such as assistance with bathing, dressing, medication management, and meal preparation.

The project, which is seeking approval from the California Department of Social Services, will feature 15 rooms, each accommodating two residents, along with amenities like a dining hall, common areas, and a community garden. The facility is designed to enhance the quality of life for seniors, with licensed vocational nurses and on-site staff available to assist residents.

The site, currently zoned as Commercial General 1, is strategically located near commercial establishments, including a gas station and lodging facilities, making it accessible for residents and visitors alike. The project includes plans for significant improvements, such as updating the building's facade, enhancing landscaping, and ensuring adequate parking with 150 spaces available.

The facility's design incorporates modern architectural elements while respecting the building's history, which dates back to its original construction as the Hills Garden Hotel in 1990. The proposed renovations aim to revitalize the structure, featuring updated paint colors, stone veneer, and decorative lighting to create an inviting atmosphere.

As the Planning Commission deliberates on this project, the community anticipates the positive impact it will have on local seniors, providing them with a supportive environment and essential services tailored to their needs. If approved, the facility is expected to become a vital resource for the aging population in San Bernardino.
