Jasper City Council approves $4.7M in grants for water and communication upgrades

Jasper City Council has taken significant steps to enhance local infrastructure and ensure equitable utility rates for residents. During their recent meeting on March 10, 2025, the council approved three grant applications totaling over $4 million aimed at improving water, sewer, and communication services in the city.

The approved grants include $840,000 for communication upgrades, $2,275,000 for water improvements, and $1,575,000 for sewer enhancements. These funds will support the development of a digital 800 megahertz radio system, which will modernize the police department's dispatch capabilities and improve emergency response across Jasper.

In addition to the grant approvals, the council discussed the findings of a recent water study that revealed significant discrepancies in utility rates. The study indicated that the water rates were operating at a negative 6.64% below cost, while sewer rates were at a negative 61%. To address these issues, the council voted to equalize rates for both inside and outside city residents, ensuring that all users pay the same rates for water and sewer services. This decision is expected to stabilize the utility funds and provide fair pricing for all residents.
